Gerri Brightwell was brought up in Devon by her English father and French mother but has lived in Spain, Thailand, Canada and the United States. She has worked as a cleaner, ice-cream seller, sandwich-maker, pottery sponger, nanny and, most recently, a teacher of English and writing. She now lives in Minneapolis with her husband and young son, and is writing a dissertation on servants in Victorian literature.
