...The congregation waited patiently as the smoldering fire ignited several small twigs, then spread to the larger branches. Bishop Hadrikus intoned the blessing, and Fr. Capranica chanted the responses. The Easter Fire was blazing. The Mass had begun.
In the city two miles away, the druids were preparing for the celebration of the vernal equinox, their spring feast day ceremony, which would begin at midnight. It would take place at an outdoor stone circle in the center of the city. The bodies of aborted children were buried in the circle: the pagans considered children in the womb to be the gods' favorite offering...

Fr. Mike Driscoll is a priest of the Diocese of Peoria, IL. He was ordained in 1992; has been pastor of several parishes; and is currently serving as chaplain of St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Ottawa, IL. He has a B.A. in Economics from the University of Illinois, an M.A. in Moral Theology from Mount St. Mary's Seminary, and a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Regent University. His doctoral dissertation was entitled "How Catholic exorcists distinguish between demon possession and mental disorders." His book on the subject of spirit possession, Demons, Deliverance, and Discernment, is published by Catholic Answers.
