This book examines the background and aftermath of the sealing of the Magna Carta by King John in 1215. In that year the whole of the county of Essex was designated as 'Forest'. The application of 'Forest-Law' in the county had little to with serving justice. The law was no more than a series of harsh taxes levied in all but name.
