United and Uniting continues the ongoing story of the United Church of Christ that Dr. Gunnemann began in his The Shaping of the United Church of Christ. From its beginning, the United Church of Christ has exhibited some signularly formative ecclesial ideas, expressed in the intention to be a united and uniting church. The author believes that form time to time these ideas need to be illustrated in the context of their ongoing expression and development. This book provides an invitation to readers to join in a recovery of the original vision and, at the same time, to allow it to correct, through historical perspective, their own understanding of the United Church of Christ. Dr. Gunnemann suggests that the needed perspectives for a fresh and renewed understanding of the vision that created the United Church of Christ are framed by the history of the modern ecumenical movement.
