This is the story of two Haitian women, Erzulie and her daughter Mignonne.
At age seven, Erzulie leaves the countryside to serve the family of Antoine and Anna Saget. But after years of near slavery, she is expelled from their home when the Sagets' discover she is pregnant. Alone, naïve, and helpless Erzulie would have faced hunger and misery but for Lina Saget, Antoine's sister.
Erzulie's daughter, Mignonne, who grows up with Lina develops into a strong woman and becomes involved in local politics as she tries to help needy, under-age peasants.
