Aziz Isa Elkun is a Uyghur poet, author, and academic based in London. He was born in Shayar County, Uyghuristan / East Turkistan (Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China) and graduated from Xinjiang University in Urumchi. Since 2001, he has lived in London, where he studied at Birkbeck, University of London.He has published widely in both Uyghur and English, including poetry, short stories, and academic research. His works explore Uyghur culture, memory, and human rights. A milestone in his literary career is the anthology "Uyghur Poems" (Everyman's Library, Penguin Random House, 2023). His debut poetry collection in Turkish, Çimenkü (A Flower Bird), was published in 2024 by Önce Kitap Publishers in Türkiye.He is an active member of the Uyghur community and the founder of the London Uyghur Ensemble (2006). In 2019, he produced the short documentary "An Unanswered Telephone Call", which portrays the suffering of his family following China's 2017 ban on international communication between Uyghurs inside and outside the region.Since 2013, Elkun has worked as a researcher at SOAS, University of London, contributing to projects such as Sounding Islam in China (2013) and Uyghur Meshrep in Kazakhstan (2018). Elkun is currently a researcher on the project Maqam Beyond Nation, funded by UK Research and Innovation.
