James Smith Allen is Professor Emeritus of History at Southern Illinois University. His books include a translation of Éliane Brault's In the Shadow of the Swastika: A Woman's Perspective on Life in Occupied France, 1940 (Routledge, 2026); A Civil Society: The Public Space of Freemason Women in France, 1744-1944 (University of Nebraska Press, 2022); and Poignant Relations: Three Modern French Women (The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001).
