Her path is linked with that of Dr. Bento Jose de Souza Goncalves (Bentinho), a brilliant young lawyer and dedicated abolitionist who has freed his own slaves at great personal financial sacrifice. The two share an ancient, powerful spiritual affinity and marry in a splendid ceremony, looking forward to a radiant future together.
However, their happiness is fiercely opposed by Severina Soares, Barbedo's former housekeeper and second wife, and her daughter Ana Maria. Driven by unbridled ambition, jealousy, and spite after Bentinho politely rejects Ana Maria's romantic advances, the two women orchestrate a ruthless slander campaign. Aided by an unscrupulous ally, they send anonymous letters defaming Esmeralda's honor. This sparks intense tension between Barbedo and his son-in-law. When Severina realizes their plot is on the verge of being exposed, she and Ana Maria sneak into Esmeralda's bedroom through a hidden revolving door and brutally strangle the young pregnant woman, framing Bentinho for the crime.
